The Indian government has lifted the ban on onion exports, allowing shipments subject to a minimum export price (MEP) of USD 550 per tonne (approximately ₹46 per kg). Additionally, a 40% export duty has been imposed. The decision aims to boost farmers’ income and comes ahead of the Lok Sabha polls in key onion-producing regions, including Maharashtra.
Previously, the Centre had banned onion exports in early December due to concerns over falling production. However, the current supply situation is comfortable, and prices remain stable in both wholesale markets and retail markets.
