India Aims to Boost Use of Artificial Intelligence in Food Processing

India is taking significant steps to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in the food processing sector. The goal is to enhance efficiency, improve farmers’ incomes, and reduce the environmental impact. At a recent conference organized by the National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM), senior bureaucrats and government advisors emphasized the need for a strategic roadmap to deploy AI tools effectively. While AI has made strides in agriculture, its application in the food processing industry is still in its early stages.

Food Processing Secretary Anita Praveen highlighted the importance of creating a roadmap for the industry, and MEITY Secretary S Krishnan advocated for broader AI adoption. One potential application discussed during the conference is the development of simple, portable devices for quality assaying of agricultural produce. Such devices could significantly improve the quality of food products, benefiting both consumers and farmers. As India aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070, AI tools are expected to play a crucial role in enhancing overall sector efficiency.
